Why is Chipping House so special?
Chipping House is a 'Home from Home' for you. The aim is to make your stay here as much
like home as possible, both comforting and welcoming. We like to feel there is an easy and natural
transition from your home to Chipping House and vice versa.
At home, freedom is a priceless commodity. So, if you want a long lie-in for example,
just let us know. We always try to cater
for your home comforts.

Who runs Chipping House?
Anthony and
Catherine Alexander (pictured here).
Chipping House is a family affair
v There’s Anthony
…
v … and then
there’s Catherine
v Our eldest
daughter is training to be a chef in France
v Our other
children help when they are home from boarding school (we have 4 children
altogether)
We have been married for over 20 years, having met in 1985, both being
chartered surveyors. We started a bed
and breakfast when our children started to go to boarding school and we had
surplus bedrooms.
Can I visit and look around?
Absolutely! Feel free to visit Chipping House and have the
opportunity to look around. This gives
us the chance to get to know you and your requirements.
Where are you?
Chipping House is a beautiful Georgian house,
facing the main square (called The Chipping) of Wotton-under-Edge, a pretty
town on the Cotswold Way. See location maps
Sat nav users, beware! There is another The
Chipping (which mean ‘the market’ in Olde English) within our postcode area but
is in the village of Kingswood. We are The Chipping in Wotton-under-Edge.
Can I
smoke?
We operate a no smoking policy inside Chipping House. If you take care of cigarette stubs and think
of other guests, you may smoke in the garden.
What will I get for breakfast?
We serve breakfast in the dining room
downstairs. We like you to order the
afternoon or evening before so that we can buy fresh food.
Breakfast is served between the hours of 7:00am - 9:00am. However, should
you require breakfast outside these times (you may want a lie-in), please let
us know the night before and we will do our very best to
cater for your needs.
If you have any
special dietary requirements, please be sure to mention when booking.

What time do I have to arrive and book out?
Checking in
time is after 4pm on the day
of your arrival. We ask that you vacate
your room by 11am on the day
that you leave. Obviously, if there are
special reasons to vary these times, we do try to accommodate you.
What are your bedrooms like?
Our bedrooms are warm,
cosy and comfortable with twin or double beds and ensuite shower rooms. By the way, all showers at Chipping House are
power showers. See photo
gallery
Berkeley Suite 1: Away from the noise of the house, this
room has a double bed, a television and tea/coffee making facilities. An ensuite shower room is adjacent with a
power shower. A camp bed, a travel cot
or a Moses basket can be provided for those guests with young children.
Berkeley Suite 2: On the first floor and interconnecting
to the above room is a well-appointed twin bedroom. Facilities are shared with Berkeley Suite
1. An additional family bathroom (with a
power shower) can be made available upon request.
FitzHardinge Room: This room is a twin room sleeping two
people with an inbuilt wardrobe, a television, tea/coffee making facilities and
an ensuite shower room, with a power shower.
Other guest rooms: Aside from the three guest bedrooms, guests
also have their own separate drawing/dining room, access to a family bathroom
and a downstairs guests’ loo.
On exceptional occasions, provided our
children are away at boarding school, we may be able to help you with other
bedrooms.
Can I bring my children?
Of course you
can. We have four children of our own
(pictured here) …
Our Berkeley Suite is ideal for a family of up
to 5, using a camp bed, travel cot or Moses basket, if you wish. The Moses basket was made by Catherine’s
mother and has had many other babies in it since, including our own children.
Can I bring my dog?
We adore dogs although are not ready to welcome
them to Chipping House yet because we do not have the facilities. At the moment, if you are happy to keep your
dog in the car (we do have private off-road parking), we can make arrangements
for providing you with water.
What happens if I have an allergy to dogs?
If you are allergic to dogs or not dog
friendly, then staying in Chipping House will not be right for you. We do have
one Labrador called Larry (aged 8), who lives in France for most of the
year, but does come home from time to time.
Health and hygiene regulations are respected and a cleaning schedule is
in place throughout.
Where can I park my car?
We have private off-road car parking to the side and rear of
Chipping House. We are facing the main
square of Wotton-under-Edge and so also have a large public car park on our
doorstep.
Are there any shops?
As we are in the centre of Wotton-under-Edge, the shops are close
by. You won’t find shops like this elsewhere
because they are independently run.
Clothes, books, gifts, cookware, pets, antiques, artwork – the list is
endless.
What entertainment is there?
Where do we start? The choice is vast. Within 5 minutes’ walking distance of
Chipping House, we have:
v
an air-conditioned cinema
v
an Arts Centre
v
a swimming pool
v
a heritage centre
v
pubs and restaurants
v
shops

Can I hook up to the Internet?
We are looking into this. Not being technologically minded, we are seeking
advice. Certainly, in the Berkeley Suite
or in the guests’ drawing room, you can use our telephone line for a small
extra cost.
Can I eat out in the evening?
Yes, very easily. Within walking distance, there are pubs, a
traditional fish and chippy, a kebab takeaway, a pizza takeaway, a Chinese
takeaway and an English restaurant and an Indian restaurant. What a choice… You can bring back takeaways and eat them in
our dining room where you can use our cutlery, crockery and glasses for a small
charge of £1 per person (to cover the cost of washing up).
What happens if I arrive too late to get a takeaway or a pub meal?
For £1.90 per person, we can offer soup and a bread roll, subject
of course to availability. If you are
running late, you only have to telephone us on your mobile phone and we can get
things ready for you when you arrive.
How do we pay?
We do
accept credit cards, cheques or cash (pounds sterling or euros). Cheques are made payable to Chipping House.
